This is one of the fastest retrieval methods and one of the easiest to accomplish. This causes the lure to twitch in the water. Twitching is accomplished by continuing to reel in the line and occasionally Pulling it. The ideal speed, however, is highly dependent upon the lure being utilized. Generally speaking, this is done at anywhere from +1 to +3 speed, with +2 being the most commonly utilized. One dot is the lowest level of success, while three dots designates a highly successful attempt. Retrieval pertains to the time after the cast, while one is reeling in the line in hopes of attracting a fish to bite.Įach retrieval method is rated via a dot system, which will be in the upper right of the UI. Retrieval, or Presentation, refers to the time before this. Reel Speed may be changed by spinning the middle mouse wheel up or down. Once a fish is hooked, Reel Speed is automatically increased to maximum speed (+4) and you begin to actually catch the fish. These speeds are denoted via a series of up and down arrows at the bottom right of the UI. Reels have 5 separate reel speeds: Reverse, +1, +2, +3, and +4. 1.7.1 this could be helpful: you can reach "3 dots".
Once you do find fish there can be multiple in the area so keep casting, especially when it is in “high traffic” bait areas like converging channels. This is why drifting and casting or trolling are popular methods. A few casts in an area for no result and it’s time to move on.
They stay still until their food comes to them. A big difference between flathead and many other fish is that when they are in a feeding mode, they don’t move around other than to break camouflage and attack. It depends on the depth of the area you’re fishing and how low the water needs to get to force the bait into moving towards the deeper water. Keep in mind however that particular spots might work well at the start of the run-out, while others may be better on the last of tide. Flathead are ambush feeders and lay in wait near drop offs and the edge of channels for food. Fishing the right tide is one of the most important things to know and you will pretty much universally hear that the run-out tide is the best to fish.
